Having Dyslexia whilst at university

"Struggling on a day-to-day basis with reading, writing and spelling, it has never stopped me from doing anything in my life that I have wanted to do."

"I started university in 2015 at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. One of the first things I did was go to the Learning Support Centre at the university - I told them about my history with spelling, reading and writing and, the sense I had that I was Dyslexic.

They were massively supportive and immediately set me up to have a formal Dyslexia test. As predicated, I was told that I had moderate Dyslexia. This was a huge relief to me as it confirmed that I was right to have these feelings of struggling more that the majority of classmates around me and that it was okay to look for extra support.

Since finding out I have Dyslexia, I have received extra support in the form of extra time and the use of a computer in every exam. It has benefited me a great deal as I feel I am now able to reach my full potential.

Struggling on a day-to-day basis with reading, writing and spelling, it has never stopped me from doing anything in my life that I have wanted to do. Although it wasn’t a quick or easy journey to get here, it has been possible. Even though I was embarrassed about my struggles when I was younger; now at the age of 20, I can honestly say I am proud to be Dyslexic as I can look back and see that I have still achieved so much nonetheless and, will continue to do so in the future.
